Football Drills to Improve Your Game
Football is all about practice. When you watch the best players in the world perform incredible skill son the pitch that is a result of years of practice and training. However, performing the correct soccer drills is essential as there is no point in practicing moves that won’t help you improve on the pitch. The following three football drills all focus on different areas of the game and will help you improve to become a better soccer player.
To become a master of through balls, you must possess the ability to play every single variation of short and long passes. Through balls require the ability to quickly judge which type of pass is the best to play and therefore require a high level of skill in all variations of passing. It is possible to practice through balls with a training partner, a full size goal, and some cones.
Place four cones along the edge of the penalty area to represent defenders
Place two cones 2.5 yards from each post on the goal line
One player acts as the receiver (Player A) and one as the player making a through ball (Player B)
First Player A passes the ball to Player B and continues their run between the cones representing defenders
Player B plays a through ball between the cones, ensuring Player A isn’t offside
Player A runs onto the ball and tries to shoot in the 2.5 yard section between the cone and the post
Take turns in playing the through ball and shooting
Vary the type of through ball including height, distance, and angle
There are literally thousands of different dribbling techniques which can be used to great effect during a soccer match. However, the basis of almost every single skill is close control of the ball while running at speed. Therefore the best way to practice your dribbling technique is by improving your ability to run with the ball at speed. To set up a drill you will need 6 cones and a soccer ball.
Place the cones randomly around an area of about half a soccer pitch
Start at any cone and dribble with the ball as fast as you can towards the other cones, turning each one over as you get there
Try to keep the ball as close to your feet as possible while running
If training alone, time yourself and keep trying to beat your best time
If training with a partner, use two different sets of color cones and try to turn over your opponents while they try to turn over yours. The person who turns all their opponents’ cones over first wins.
You can add rules such as a specific dribbling technique must be performed every time a cone is turned over
Make sure you keep your head up while dribbling and maintain awareness of your surroundings
The best way to improve your shooting ability is to practice as much and as often as possible. Practice shooting from a variety of positions and using a mixture of power and accuracy. A great drill which can be used to develop your shooting skills is known as the Juventus Shooting Drill, as it is used by Juventus FC in Italy to develop their youth forwards and as practice for their first team players. To perform this drill you will need a full size goal, some cones, and a training partner.
Place two cones on the goal line, 2.5 yards from each goal post
Set up two zones on the edge of the penalty area, using 4 cones for each zone. The zones should be in line with each goal post and measure approximately 6 yards x 3 yards
The feeder (Player A) passes the ball to the finisher (Player B) who alternatively receives the ball on their left foot and then their right foot
After some practice, the balls can be randomly played into either zone to develop shooting reactions
Shots should be aimed between the goalpost and the cone on either side of the goal
Try to attempt first time shots where possible and keep variation in the shot types
The drill can be done using a goalkeeper instead of cones along the goal line. If using a goalkeeper, use reactions to pounce on rebounds
